About our team - Mō te tīma
The Department of Preventive and Social Medicine is a long-established academic centre for public health. It has teaching staff in Māori health, epidemiology, public health medicine, biostatistics, health policy, health promotion, qualitative research, environmental health, health economics, injury prevention, and occupational health.
The Department offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate papers and teaches medical and health sciences students at all levels of their course. Preventive and Social Medicine is part of the Dunedin School of Medicine in the Division of Health Sciences, University of Otago (see appendix for more details).
The Department has strong connections to the Biostatistics Centre (otago.ac.nz/Biostats) and the wider biostatistics community at the University of Otago. The Lecturer in Biostatistics would join this community of biostatisticians.
The role - Te mahi
We have the opportunity to hire a Lecturer in Biostatistics to teach courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate public health and biostatistics programmes, to develop new biostatistics courses as needed and to engage in health research in their areas of expertise and interest. The person appointed will also be expected to supervise research students and to contribute to the life of the Department.
- Engage in collaborative biostatistics research with a focus on public health.
- Teaching biostatistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Supervision or co-supervision of research students in biostatistics and public health.
Your skills and experience - Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- A postgraduate qualification in biostatistics or related discipline with a strong grounding in biostatistical theory.
- Previous biostatistics teaching experience at a university level is preferred.
- The applicant must have the ability to communicate with small and large groups and should have evidence of an ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
- A strong commitment to research is required and applicants should have a record of publication and other evidence of research capability.
- Evidence of research funding and postgraduate student supervision are desirable.
- The applicant is expected to commit to developing an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi, particularly in relation to Public Health and the University Māori Strategic Framework.

This is a full-time (1.0FTE), permanent, confirmation path position, located in Dunedin.
Salary range for this position is: $90,902 to $107,300 per annum.
