A position of medical research officer with the Repatriation Medical Authority (RMA) is available in the RMA Secretariat on an ongoing basis.
The RMA is a statutory authority created by Parliament. It consists of five eminent medical specialists who are responsible for making determinations regarding disease causation for the purpose of compensation for veterans and serving military personnel. The main responsibility of the position is to undertake critical reviews of the epidemiological and medical literature to identify the causes of a range of diseases. As part of a team of researchers, working under the guidance of the Principal Medical Officer, the successful applicant will select medical-scientific papers for detailed study. Using epidemiological principles to critically appraise the selected studies and summarise the evidence for causation within the framework of the Veterans' Entitlements Act, the successful applicant will prepare detailed briefing papers for the consideration of the members of the RMA to inform them in the determination of Statements of Principles.
The successful applicant will need a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles of epidemiology, biostatistics and the health or biomedical sciences. Preference will be given to an applicant having or working towards a Master of Public Health or equivalent, or relevant experience in the area of epidemiology or public health.
